The governing body of world soccer reconfirmed that next year`s world soccer championships are known as the FIFA 2002 World Cup Korea/Japan, putting an end to disputes over which host country`s name should come first.

The FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee made the reconfirmation in a meeting Thursday with the organizing committees of Korea and Japan at the FIFA Secretariat in Zurich, Switzerland. Japan agreed to use the official title, the Korean World Cup Organizing Committee (KOWOC) announced.

However, KOWOC said that FIFA, in consideration of the situation of the Japanese World Cup Organizing Committee (JAWOC), recommended Japan use the name 2002 FIFA World Cup without the country names inside Japan. The tripartite talks were attended by KOWOC co-chairmen Chung Mong-Joon and Lee Yun-Taek, and secretary general Moon Dong-Hu as well as JAWOC chairman Sho Nasu and secretary general Yasuhiko Endo.
