Snow expected after bitter cold abates

Posted January. 16, 2001 18:41,

In the wake of recent heavy snowfalls, more snow as well as rain is expected at intervals of 1~2 days from Wednesday through next Tuesday. Those making trips home during the Lunar New Year's holiday are thus expected to face even worse traffic problems than usual.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) on Tuesday, light snow will fall in the Seoul, Kyonggi, Chungchong, Honam and West coast regions on Wednesday. On Friday, the weather will be cloudy nationwide with occasional snow or rain.

Even on Saturday, the first day for travelers heading home, sporadic snow or rain is expected nationwide. On Jan. 22, the Seoul, Kyonggi and Chungchong regions will see snow or rain while the same is expected in the Kangwon, Yongdong and Cheju regions on Jan. 23. Freezing temperatures that began on Jan. 10 should subside, bringing temperatures back to last year¡¯s level. However, morning temperatures will remain in the sub-zero range, leading to icy roads that are expected to cause traffic tie-ups.

The KMA revealed, ¡°As the continental cold front subsides, a low pressure front coming from the West will pass through Korea, causing snow or rain to fall at regular intervals. The freezing weather may abate but the roads will remain icy as morning temperatures remain below the freezing point.¡±
