Last year, thanks to soaring demand for information technology and exports of IT products, many Korean companies are ranked as leading firms in Asia.

Japan's Nihon Geizei Shimbun, which has conducted a survey of 12 Asian countries including Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, ranked Samsung Electronics as the second largest Asian corporation with 1999 sales of US$23.61 million. A total of 34 companies are included among Asia's top 100 largest companies, which excluded Japanese firms.

Hong Kong's China Petrochemical was ranked as the largest company in Asia with US$27.41 billion, while India's India Oil and China Oil are ranked as third and fourth largest firms with US$21.6 billion and US$20.1 billion.

Other Korean companies included among the top 100 Asian firms are Korea Electric Power (fifth with US$14.03 billion), Hyundai Motors (eighth with US$12.88 billion), SK (12th with US$10.16 billion), Pohang Iron & Steel (13th with US$9.6 billion), LG Electronics (14th with US$9.5 billion), Korea Telecom (15th with US$8.67 billion), Kia Motors (18th with US$7.1 billion) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (20th with US$5.7 billion).
