`Super Peanut` Mi-Hyun Kim (¡§Ú016¢®¢´Hanbyul) put in her greatest performance of the season but was unable to emerge victorious in the US Women`s Open (total prizes of US$ 2.75 million) as she faltered in the final stages. On the other hand, Park Ji-Eun (Ewha Women`s University) and Pak Seri (Astra) fought back in the last round to be ranked in the upper tier.
In the final round of the tournament, which was held at Illinois Libertyville Merit Golf Club (par 72), Kim suffered the most heartbreak of any player.
Kim had been joint 3rd until the 3rd round. And on the first 3 holes of the final round, thanks to her delicate iron shots, she started with 3 birdies.
Up until the 15th hole, she racked up 4 birdies with 1 bogey and was ranked second to Karrie Webb, who had a 2 shot lead. However, on the par 3 16th Kim hit a 9 wood tee shot that plopped into the water hazard, giving her a double bogey for the hole. She also choked on the 18th hole by hitting into the stands beyond the green, ending with a bogey by landing on the green in 4 shots. In the end, she posted an even par for the day, and was forced to be satisfied with joint 4th.
Karrie Webb also seemed to waver during the last round. After recording a bogey at the par 4 4th, she committed a double bogey at the 7th hole (par 3) and showed visible signs of crumbling after hitting her tee shot at the 8th hole into the heavy rough. But she was able to recover her cool after saving par by overcoming the situation with a 4 on and one putt.
On the 10th, she got a birdie and reduced another shot at the 18th to finish at 1 over for the day. She recorded a aggregate of 6 under (282), winning the Open easily with the second place group 5 shots away. Her victory has enabled her to pass Anika Sorenstam both in winnings and the Player of the Year points race.
