The U.S. Army in Korea is expected to make an official apology for its release of formaldehyde, a toxic chemical, in the Han River.

Daniel Patrosky, commander of the 8th U.S. Army, will visit Seoul Mayor Koh Kun to apologize for causing Seoul citizens trouble with the release of toxic chemicals, as well as to inform the intention to investigate the incident and punish personnel involved.

In addition, Samuel Tailor, public relations officer of the U.S. Army, will hold a press conference to read Patrosky`s statement of apology. It will be the first official apology by the 8th U.S. Army commander since 1945, when the U.S. troops first were stationed in Korea.

Earlier, the U.S. Army sent a letter to the Environment Ministry, saying that it is investigating the incident related to dumping of toxic chemicals. It also mentioned that the authorities would punish the personnel involved after completion of the investigation.

The U.S. Army also noted that it would take necessary measures in order to prevent recurrence of such an accident in the future.
