A new Korean Education Center will open its doors in the United States in 29 years. The Ministry of Education announced on Wednesday that the Korean Education Center will open in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday.

The center supports local schools adopt Korean language classes as regular courses (as first and second foreign language), and also provides many programs including Korean language school, life-time education for expats, and helping foreign students studying in Korea.

Since its first opening in Japan to educate mother tongue and history to expats living in Japan in 1963, the Korean Education Center is now located in 18 countries with 41 centers in Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia. At the current time, there are seven education centers in U.S. cities, such as Washington, New York and Chicago. The recent opening in Atlanta comes as the first in 29 years since the latest one opened in Houston in 1988.

The ministry explained the background for establishing the center in Atlanta where around 240,000 expats live. Upon the continuous requests from the Korean community, the new education center has been established to strengthen bonds and enforce national identity among Koreans.

“The Korean Education Center in Atlanta will become a beacon of hope for 240,000 expats who have been longing for educational support, and will also contribute in mutual growth between the two nations,” said Kim Seong-jin, South Korean consul general in Atlanta.
