The November 14, 1964 edition of the Dong-A Ilbo depicted top movie stars Shin Seong-il and Eom Aeng-ran’s wedding as “crowded with many stars fully dressed up and resembling a filming set.” The couple was so legendary that invitations to their wedding ceremony were black-marketed. More than 4,000 fans swarmed the wedding place.

Even after they tied their knots, their life attracted many fans' attention – particularly because of the husband’s free soul. As a young star who stole many women’s hearts, his love life was very colorful to the extent that his wife resorted to the superstition of putting a razor in his pillow in an attempt to put his libido under control. Finally, they “graduated” from their marriage in 1978, as people put it today. While they maintain their marital status, they are living separate lives. Shin was also elected a lawmaker in 2000 after three failed attempts, although he ended up serving two years in prison for bribery. He was labeled as a “bad guy” for his remarks about wanting to kiss a “woman with beautiful hips” and his autobiography confessing his extramarital affairs.

However, Shin as a movie actor is a professional who is thorough in managing himself. Starring as the protagonist in 506 films, he takes thorough care of his health conditions on the belief that a genuine actor should always be ready. According Kwon Roh-kap, an advisor to the People’s Party who served in the same prison as Shin, the actor worked out at every opportunity with a concrete barbell, maintaining as good a muscle mass as men in their 30s. Nevertheless, we heard the news that he had been diagnosed with a stage-3 lung cancer.

Eom Aeng-ran discovered a breast cancer while appearing on a Channel A health show four years ago. Just as she talked about how reliable it was to have her long-hated husband back, Shin impressed his wife with extremely great care. Having just started to receive radioactive treatments, Shin said he did not believe the survival rate, vowing to show hope and a miracle. We hope that the legendary actor who turned a chapter in the history of Korean films will impress the people once again with his strong determination.
