Gov't designates Kim Hong-do's artwork as national treasure no. 2000

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea has designated Samgongbulhwando, an eight-section folding screen painting drawn by Kim Hong-do (1745-?) to commemorate King Seonjo’s full recovery from chickenpox in 1801, as national treasure no. 2000. It has been 56 years since the amendment of the Cultural Heritage Protection Act in 1962.

The cultural agency divides the type of cultural assets of Korea as tangible cultural assets, intangible cultural assets, memorial, and folk cultural assets. Treasures are the most important of all in tangible assets and legacies that are of great value and rare in the point of human cultures are designated as national treasures.

The Cultural Heritage Administration designated 116 heritages, including national treasure no.1 Sungryemun, as national treasures in December 1962 and 423 heritages including Heunginjimun as treasures in January following year. A total of 336 national treasures and 2,132 treasures have been named for the past 56 years.
