South Korea’s presidential office Cheong Wa Dae announced Monday that it will pursue punitive steps and legal action against Kim Tae-woo, a former presidential investigator of the special inspection team, for continuing to make false allegations.

“Kim’s disclosing of intelligence reports and making false accusations cannot be tolerated,” presidential spokesperson Kim Eui-kyeom said. “These actions go directly against Cheong Wa Dae’s security regulations, so (the presidential office) sent an additional request for penalization to the Ministry of Justice today.” He also added that Cheong Wa Dae will take all possible actions against Kim as what he has done is subject to criminal punishment. Korean ambassador to Russia Woo Yoon-keun, who has been reported by Kim as having taken illegal funds, said that he will file a libel lawsuit against Kim and media outlets.

Cheong Wa Dae dismissed the revelations of Kim that the inspection team looked into activities of the son of a former prime minister and bank presidents as “impurities” that happened to come into the hands of the team along with intelligence reports. The presidential office also said that the alleged reports on civilians have all been destroyed and the head of the team took corrective action against Kim. Yet, controversy is likely to arise as the presidential office’s remarks signify that the inspection team has intended to look into information regarding civilians though in an indirect way.
