Boston Red Sox extend Alex Cora's contract through 2021

The Boston Red Sox, the champions of the World Series in 2018, announced on Wednesday (local time) that it will extend the contract for an extra year with Manager Alex Cora. Following his “3+1” contract with Boston last year, he will have his contract extended through 2021 with a team option for the 2022 season. This gives him an extra year for his guarantee period.

The Puerto Rican played in the Major League Baseball for 14 years both as short-stopper and second baseman. He won the World Series in 2007 with the Red Sox, but he mainly played as substitute.

It was in 2017 that Cora showed potential for success as manager when he became the bench coach of the Houston Astros. Fluent in English and Spanish, Cora communicated with his players directly and earned their trust, making significant contributions to the Astros’ World Series championship in that year. Under his “brotherly leadership,” Boston won 108 games this season, the best single-season record for the Red Sox, as well as the World Series championship.
