다음 기사를 최대한 빨리 읽어 보라. 물론 뜻을 이해하면서 읽어야 한다. 이때 시간을 재야 하는데 스톱워치가 없는 분은 키폰-타이머를 이용하거나, 시계의 초침이 정각을 가리킬 때 읽기 시작해 다 읽고 난 뒤 경과된 시간을 체크하면 된다. 준비됐으면 시작!

자, 결과는? 1분 내에 다 읽고 이해한 사람은 전도 유망한 분이고, 그 이상 걸렸다면 영어엔진을 활성화시키는 훈련이 필요하다. 그러려면 다음과 같은 나쁜 습관부터 고쳐야 한다.
첫째: 읽었던 부분을 자꾸 다시 읽는 ‘되돌이습관’
둘째: 문법을 따져봐야 직성이 풀리는 ‘따지기 습관’
셋째: 다 읽고 나서 다시 우리말 순서로 번역해서 이해하는 ‘번역습관’
넷째: 잘 모르는 단어를 만나면 포기하는 ‘사전 의존습관’
이런 증상은 우리나라에서 중고교를 다닌 사람들 대부분에게 있다. 영어문장을 ‘암호해독식’으로 따져가며 해석하는 수업을 듣는 동안에 생겨난 나쁜 습관들이다. 이것들을 교정하는 훈련과 함께 문법감각, 소리감각, 어휘력 등의 자동화훈련을 하면 영어엔진이 씽씽 돌아가기 시작한다. 그러면 무엇을 어떻게 훈련해야 할까. 그것은 다음호에 계속 하자. 棟
